Ohio was one of the first places where settlers streamed and settled into after the Revolutionary War. It also became one of the early centers of industry after transport connections were provided with the completion of the Ohio-Eerie Canal. The state is sometimes referred to as the ‘Mother of Presidents’ with as many as seven US presidents being born there. Ohio is located in the eastern north-central and is the 11th largest of the 12 midwestern states. Ohio ranks 35th in size among the 50 states covering a total area of 41,330 sq mi (107,044 sq km), of which land comprises 41,004 sq mi (106,201 sq km) and inland water 326 sq mi (823 sq km).

Ohio is bordered on the North by Michigan and the Canadian province of Ontario; on the East by Pennsylvania and West Virginia; on the South by West Virginia and Kentucky; and on the West by Indiana.
The state's geographic center is in Delaware County, 25 mi (40 km) NNE of Columbus.
